Walter Keeler

Walter Keeler was born in London in 1942 and trained at Harrow School of Art in the early 1960's, where he studied under Mick Casson and Victor Margrie. He set up his first studio in 1965 and became involved in teaching the newly established Harrow Studio Pottery Course. He has held his present studio in Gwent since 1976. Known primarily for his individual functional pots in saltglazed stoneware, Walter Keeler has become one of the foremost potters in this country and his work is widely exhibited and collected both here and abroad.

With shape, use and purpose as his main concerns, the majority of Walter Keeler's work is first thrown on the wheel, then manipulated, cut and assembled into vessels. In recent years some of his work has looked to the Whieldon wares of the 18th Century and recreated their rich, colourful, fluid glazes on earthenware. Walter Keeler has had numerous one-person, as well as group shows, and his work is featured in many national and international collections, most notably the V&A, Stoke-on-Trent City Museum and the National Museum of Art in Kyoto, Japan.
