Clare Crouchman

Clare Crouchman is interested in the intricate and asymmetrical forms found in the landscape, both occurring naturally and as a result of human intervention. She is particularly attracted to repeat patterns on both large and small scales and the configurations within objects that have been transformed by time and place. Recently, a trip to New York drew her attention to the rhythms and patterns of the urban landscape.

She aims to harness a balance between order and disorder and therefore create a dynamic between the carefully selected elements. With the tactile quality of the ceramic material and the purposefully composed rhythms and textures, Clare Crouchman endeavours to stimulate the viewer’s awareness visually, sensually and intellectually.

I use T-material, several high firing clays and Limoges porcelain within a two dimensional format. The different clays are layered and inlaid to build up a textured image. Fine lines are etched directly into the clay and a subtle use of oxides and glaze enhances the physical surface quality.
