Carlos Versluys |
Born in Tangiers and spent his early years in South America and Africa. The landscapes witnessed at this time have permeated his work today.
He studied ceramics at the Chelsea Westminster School, where he also worked as a ceramics technician. There he gained first hand experience of the technical and practical aspects of ceramics. His throwing technique was taught by Daphne Carnegy, but otherwise he is virtually self-taught.
He set up his first studio in 1986 and taught ceramics from 1987 to 1994 in Nottinghamshire. He then moved to Lincolnshire and in the Spring of 1994, set up Vine Farm Pottery. He produces individual thrown pots, which are carved, impressed and textured by hand, often incorporating a high degree of hand-building. These are made from heavily grogged stoneware clay, matt ash glazed, and fired in a gas reduction kiln to 1300°c.
