Glen Cambell |
The award of a Goldsmiths precious metal bursary for design in 1994 whilst still studying at Manchester Metropolitan University helped launch Glenn Campbell’s career as a jeweller. Glenn soon went on to win 2nd place in the Goldsmiths Young Silversmith of the year award. He then immersed himself in the careful study of metalsmithing techniques including a year spent working with blacksmiths around the country to develop his forging skills.
Hand-working in 18ct gold, silver and platinum, the inspiration for each piece originates through experimenting directly with the metal by folding, forging and twisting. The resulting forms echo nature because the processes used to create them are inherently linked to the metals’ natural properties. While the ductile property of precious metals enable them to literally flow into new forms under the hammer, the successive blows leave a distinctive texture on the surface of the metal, which as well as a key design element also stands as a record of the creative process.
