Nigel Moores

I can never fully explain what I do, only give a clue as to what I think I do.
One can be aware of many influences, visually, emotionally and conceptually, but after a period of time, one has a clearer notion of the concerns that underpin the work.

Growing up in West Africa impressed on me certain colours, light and textures that would resurface years later. Spending the greater part of ten years away at school had a different impact, but just as lasting. Of course there were many teachers that opened new ideas or ways of seeing. Some ‘teachers’ came in the form of books or from the briefest of meetings, others via their work over many years.

My main line of enquiry has been colour and its relationship to emotions. Choosing Landscape Architecture as an eighteen year old, gives a clear indication of a core interest. Add to this a strong preference for contemporary dance over ballet, concerts over musicals, theatre over opera, colour over line, poetry over the narrative, surrealism over the rational and ambiguity over the literal, one begins to understand what drives the work forward.

Memory, dreams and emotions are the constant themes of my work. I attempt to capture these fleeting events in paint, as a cloud catcher with a butterfly net!
