Mike Dodd recalls that when he was about 12 and out on a walk through the fields at the back of his school he noticed a yellow crest on a recently ploughed furrow. On reaching it he took a handful - it was pure clay. To this day he remembers its sensuousness, its plasticity and it became his passion. The nature of this passion, for Mike, is the recognition that beauty, vitality, warmth, and sincerity can be communicated through form, in this case, pottery. The profound feelings engendered by good form, by subtlety and depth of colour, the patina of surface, the sensitivity of rims and feet etc awoke in him not only the need to pursue this ancient craft but to find his own formal language to freshly communicate the delight he felt.
“I love the process of discovery, of letting go, of allowing one's own aliveness its own unique play. It’s fascinating to watch and to be absorbed by this relationship between disciplined technique and the free play of the heart.”
Mike Dodd
" A voyage driven by a life force which literally erupts in the clay and the kiln. A triumph of passion which recognizes and liberates the natural qualities and textures of the world around us. The experience is not limited to the pottery itself but extends to questions about our environment and all forms of life. Take a moment to read and then re-examine. Fresh and inspiring."
