Craig Underhill

Craig’s work explores the visual qualities that are created by the influence of mankind on the natural landscape and of nature on the man-made landscape. He uses drawing and painting as a method of exploring and developing ideas before ceramic pieces are made. The forms that he makes are constructed with slabs and vary in size from small pieces (15–20 cm high) to more monumental pieces (70–80 cm high). Surfaces are built up in stages using combinations of incised lines, slips and glazes that are applied with a balance of spontaneity and knowledge form past experience.

Craig graduated in Fine Art (Ceramics) in 1990 and has since worked as a technician and as a lecturer in ceramics in both the UK and the USA. He has exhibited in numerous galleries throughout the UK and has recently taken part in a 3-artist exhibition in the Netherlands.
