Ashraf Hanna |
Ahsraf Hanna creates ceramic pieces with inextricable links to the forms and techniques of the ancient world, yet utterly contemporary in their personality.
He is always excited by the balance and interaction between the precision of his designs and the less controllable nature of the firing process. The process of burnishing and smoke firing poses many challenges and the results can never be taken for granted since a successful piece is essentially the result of a collaboration between design and chance, precision and spontaneity, artist and elements – for it is the flames which ultimately breath life into the work.
Ashraf initially studied Theatre Design in London before finding his true vocation working with clay. He has exhibited widely (including Collect 2006 at the V & A) and has work in the collections of the Royal Bank of Scotland and Rufford Ceramic Centre.
