Jonathan Wade
Jonathan Wade is a ceramicist who specialises in sculptural vessels with an oriental influence.
Jonathan’s work is influenced by Far Eastern and European art, design and architecture. Japanese crafts are of particular interest, ancient artefacts as well as modern objects. Repetition and contrast are an important aspect of each piece he designs. Jonathan tries to create interesting visual relationships through subtle variation of repeated forms, or through more apparent distinctions in shape, surface and materials.
Recent work includes small sculptural pieces vessels such as plate forms, vases and lidded jars. The artist uses porcelain and stoneware clays and glazes that emphasise the forms. Each piece is made up of hand-built or wheel-thrown elements, which are then used to construct the desired shapes or arrangements. Some pieces are constructed from repeated strong geometric shapes and some are constructed from varied shapes
Exhibitions include Ceramic Art London 08, 07 and 06 and the Zimmer Stewart Gallery where Jonathan’s work was shown alongside painter Richard Davidson. Jonathan has also won several grants including a Crafts Council Development Award, an Arts Council Grants For The Arts Award for Chelsea Crafts Fair and an Arts Council Grants For The Arts Award for Origin crafts fair. Jonathan holds a BA (Hons) in Three Dimensional Design: Ceramics from Bath Spa University College.
